THE VINEYARDS

In 2003 Mr. Mario Villareal bought a property in Guadalupe’s Valley in Baja California, in which he planned to build a house and plant vines, with the purpose of winemaking for himself and his family and friends.

In 2004 they started planning the plantation and that same year they planted five hectares of grapevines, which included: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Franc. The plants were brought from a certified plant nursery in California, USA, and were grafted on the 1103p rootstock, which adapts the best to our zone. And although back then they had small amounts of water, it had a high quality for the crop.

In 2005 they planted three more hectares of grapevines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Primitivo and Cabernet Franc.

In 2006 they planted six and a half hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Primitivo and Cabernet Franc.

In 2007 they planted two and a half hectares of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. And there’s another hectare of Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, and table wines like Red Globe, Princess, Autom Royal, Superior and Thompson.

In 2008 the varieties of Mourverde and Primitivo were replaced by others, like Tempranillo and Malbec.

General aspects

The frames for the vineyard plantation are two: one that’s 3 m between streets x 1 m between plants long, that give us a total of 3, 333 plants per hectare; and another that’s 2.5 m between streets x 1 m between plants long, that give us a total of 4, 000 plants per hectare, with a productions of 8 to 10 tons per hectare.

The soil has a good quality; it’s a fertile one that stands up for being clay loam. Nowadays there’s more water, that’s also of good quality and with low salinity, which makes it ideal for winemaking. In 2008 they drilled the ground to extract water from further depths, resulting in good results for the project.

The type of training of the vineyard is unilateral, with two levels of moving wires that guide the foliage in a vertical way.

Inside the vineyard you can find the winery, the boutique, the house, and a crop of orange-trees, lemon-trees, almond-trees, fig-trees, peach-trees, nectarine trees, plum-trees, etc., all of them for family consumption.

And that’s how a family field home of relaxation, became a successful high quality winemaking company after planting the first grapevines and releasing their first wine production to the public.

These days, a more modern bigger boutique is being build and it comes from Emevé’s need to be better and to offer the best to our guests, that so nicely decide to visit us in Guadalupe’s Valley.
